“Vulnerability” George Floyd by Dan Reisner

George Floyd sculpture by Dan Reisner

“When I saw it on the news and then on the Internet, it caught me with intensities that I have no words to describe…I felt I had to do something with it, as a kind of an “immediate witness”. This incident happened in the U.S. and reached the whole world in seconds. It went ‘viral’. What happened in Minneapolis, sent ‘ripples’, it touched me and hit me with tremendous intensity. When living in a global village, everyone is exposed to online events…In my local space, I can witness an event that takes place in another part of the world and experience it as if it happened in my local surroundings. I can identify with it and respond to it and create ‘ripples’ around it as they touch me here. My answer is my art which ripples back there into the world…to emphasize, by my abilities, that this cannot go on, it is time for a change!”

An interview on i24 News

An interview about the making of my latest sculpture in the context of the killing of George Floyd, the social changes it is bringing and the healing powers of art- “I believe in the healing role of art and its ability to create change.
Representing the moment of death is a known subject in art history, and is called: “Momento mori”, the moment of death. Sculpting this moment of death, in this historical moment, is the representation of the moment of social change”.
